On October 27th and 28th, 2012, a new edition of the Team World Championship will be held in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil; the only world championship for the top ranked athletes that will be held during this Olympic year (the IJF also organizes the Kata World Championship and the Veterans World Championship in 2012).
Only a few weeks after the London Olympic Games, the Team World Championship, together with the Judo Grand Prix, Abu Dhabi 2012, which will be held a few weeks prior to the Brazilian Rendezvous, open a new Olympic cycle, which will be concluded on the occasion of the Rio Olympics in 2016.
This event will represent a very good opportunity to meet again with the best athletes in the world. After last year's edition of the Team World Championship, which was held in Paris with great success, just after the individual world championship, the 2012 edition will gather together the best national teams in the world. As the IJF President, Mr. Marius Vizer, explained: "Brazil was not chosen by chance. In four years from now, we will come to Rio for the next Olympic Games and we do hope that the team tournament will be integrated into the Olympic program. That's exactly why the format of the competition in Salvador will be the same as the one we propose to integrate into the Olympic program."
"The team competition has something special, something different", often says the IJF Head Sports Director, Vladimir Barta. "We believe that it is totally adapted to the Olympic spirit and the feedback, that we get from the IOC after last year's edition of the competition in Paris, was excellent. It would be a perfect ending of an Olympic cycle", before adding: "In Salvador, it is really difficult to say which team will be the new world champion. During a team event everybody can win or loose because the 'team spirit' can completely change the predictions and the atmosphere is just incredible. Top champions will be in Brazil for the big event, but even outsiders, new and young reserves, can play and, for sure, will play an outstanding role. For the team, every athlete wants to put 110% of energy to win. It will be also a perfect test for the Brazilian public in the perspective of next year Senior World Championship (Rio 2013) and of the next Olympic Games."
But before entering the Olympic program, 16 men's and 16 women's teams will come to Brazil to discover the "worldwide famous city, Salvador de Bahia, located on the North East coast of Brazil" declared Paulo Wanderley, President of the Brazilian Judo Confederation and of the Pan-American Judo Confederation, before adding: "After the fantastic last Olympics, the top nations of our sport will step on the mat, aiming for the world title to crown their season with".
Among the favorites will be Japan, Korea, Brazil, France, Russia, Uzbekistan and many others. But we will have to wait until the last minute of the competition to discover the new Team World Champions in men and women. The Team World Championship will definitely be one of the ultimate events of 2012.
