Despite the summer temperatures and the blue sky above Moscow today, competitors, spectators and organizers stood all day long inside the venue to enjoy the show given by the best judokas of the world, and the show today was really fantastic! With almost 60% of the fights ending by ippon, the heavy weight categories showed how enjoyable judo is, when it is practiced at such a high level.
In the Men under 81kg category, Nivontov, from Russia, who came here being on the second place in the World Ranking List (WRL) finished on the first step of the podium. On his way to the final, he defeated Ole Bischof who is, once again this year, among the medalists. Korean, Song, and Brasilian Canto also obtained a precious medal.
No doubt that in the men under 90kg, the first place of the WRL will remain the property of the Japanse, Ono. Even, if he was not far for being beaten during his semi-final against the strong Lituanian Bauza, who scored a beautiful waza-ari at the very beginning of the combat, Ono remained concentrated and finally defeated Bauza with a fantastic O-Uchi-Gari. The second Japanse fighter of the category was not able to find any solution against number one Ono, in the final. Choriev (UZB) took the second bronze medal of the category.
Brasilian samba was played in the men under 100kg as the half heavy weight category was won by a strong Correa who defeated the local Khaybulaev (RUS) in the final. Anai, once again was awaited on the first place, but after his second place in Rio (he lost against Elco Van der Geest in a few seconds) and his defeat in Tunis (beaten by the French Stiegelmann), he lost here in Moscow against the future winner of today's category. Thierry Fabre, from France, took a nice 3rd place.
In the heavy weight category, more than 88% of the fights ended by ippon before the bell, but the final which last until the flag decision of the referees. The egyptian who was sure to win until the very last second of the regular time, had to go all through the golden score against Bor from Hungary, to celebrate his victory (three blue flags). For sure, El Shehaby will be one of the major opponents of the Frenchman Riner during the next Senior World Championship Tokyo 2010. Bondarenko (UKR) and KIM took the bronze of the category.
Today was the day of the tall Mezaros (HUN) who won against the smiling Bosch (NED) in the final, while Chollet (FRA) and Hwang (KOR) took the bronze in the Women under 70kg category.
Who can stop the French Tcheumeo in the 78 category ? Today it was the chinese, YANG, Xiuli (Olympic champion in Beiing 2008) who found the perfect timing to defeat the young Frenchwoman in the final. But, looking carefully at Tcheumeo's results this year must worry many of the fighters if this half heavy weight category. Indeed, the young lady, who is only practicing judo since five years, was first at the Judo Grand Prix Tunis 2010, then third at the Judo Grand Slam Rio 2010. With her second place today, she may dream of even better results in the near future.
The women's heavy weight were dominated by the Asian countries as three medals went back into the asian countries pocket: Tsukada (JPN) finished first ahead Tachimoto, also from Japan and Chinese Qin. Only Polish Sadkowska, representing the European Continent, took a bronze medal.
After that new edition of the Judo Grand Slam Moscow 2010, it is clear that the Senior World Championship Tokyo 2010 is may be more open than it was thought a few months ago. Of course, Japanese team will be the team to beat next September. They will be in front of their public and the Japanese anthem will probably be played several times. But today's results showed that all the other continents want also their own piece of the cake. With 21 countries, amoung the 54 engaged in that tournament, gaining medals, Judo stays definitely a worldwide sport. The new refereeing rules are now well adopted by all the judokas. With only 5 Hansokumake among 455 fights (1%) during the all weekend, and so much beautiful technics, Judo is really a beautiful sport that shows real values.
