From 10:00am until the night, 248 fights took place on the four tatamis of the Megasport Arena, which is usually dedicated to ice hockey. If the mats where a little slippery for some competitors, the atmosphere was far to be cold all day long and the level of the judo was quite high. If once again, Japan imposed its supremacy on the women's light weight categorie by winning the two golds, Uzbekistan, Russia, Austria and France harvested the five other gold medals. Even if the next world championship will be held in Japan, next September, and that it will be really difficult to beat the nippon squad on its field, it shows clearly that the other countries won't let the country of the rising sun win all the medals. The example of ASAMI Haruna (JPN), third in the rankng list, beaten during her first fight by the Russian Kristina RUMYANTSEVA, beaten later on by the French Laetitia PAYET, is a very good example of that spirit. Nevertheless, the Japanse anthem was played two times in the 48 and 52 weight categories, silver and bronze medals going to Korea, France, Belgium, Netherlan, Portugal, Spain and Russia.
For the women under 57kg, the podium was completely European and Sabrina FILZMOSER, who was "only" ranked 8th in the WRL at the beginning of the day, finished on the highest step, leaving the Protugese Monteiro (WRL 2) and the two Germans behind her. In 63 kg, again, the title went to a European judoka as Gevrise EMANE from France, after her title in Paris, at the beginning of this year, won her second Grand Slam tournament in 2010, with a serious judo all day long. For her, the next step is definitely the world title in Tokyo, in September.
In the men's category, the Uzbekistan judoka, Rishod SOBIROV, won after a fantastic day of competition leaving far behind hium number one's Hiraoka from Japan who lost against Yerkebulan KOSSAYEV (KAZ) who was only ranked at the 104th place before the competition. Mongolia and Italy took the two bronze medals. Under 66kg, the title went to the Russian MOGUSHKOV, in front of an athusiastic public. The last men's category of the day was won by a judoka on its coming back. Benjamin Darbelet, from France added a third medal, and a gold one, that ended up in the French bag. With Two Asian countries (KOR and JPN) and one Brasilian, the podium of the Men's 73kg was really international.
Today, is the day of the heavy weight categories. For sure good judo to watch and to follow on IJF web site.
